Parr Shakespeare

Honoring the Teachers Who Bring Shakespeare to Life

There are so many stories of how superb teachers of Shakespeare in high school influenced their students in most remarkable and permanent ways. Like so many others, the educators involved in the prize had impactful experiences so we are going to include their testaments to the wonderful teachers.

Zachary Lesser: Shakespeare professor, University of Pennsylvania
“My life with Shakespeare was sparked by a class I took in twelfth grade, with a teacher who clearly loved the plays and wanted to pass on that passion to us. Shakespeare should be for everyone, and everyone can find something different in Shakespeare’s work that is meaningful to them. I’m excited to be a part of the Parr Prize to recognize teachers across the U.S. who are making Shakespeare come alive for their students.”

Gary Parr: Founder of the Prize
“This prize finds its inspiration in Miss Gragg, the remarkable English teacher who lit the way for me in 10th grade in the public schools of North Carolina. I know many have been guided by such teachers. Through this award, we honor those educators whose passion and imagination breathe life into Shakespeare, making his words a lasting echo in the hearts of their students.”
